MANTELLATE SISTERS SERVANTS OF MARY

Our Congregation, “Mantellate Sisters, Servants of Mary of Pistoia” originated in Treppio in 1861, the foundresses were two Tertiaries of the Order of Servants of Mary: Sister Filomena Rossi and Sister Giovanna Ferrari

 

THE JOURNEY OF THE MANTELLATE SISTERS SERVANTS OF MARY

Our formation depends primary upon the action of the Holy Spirit. In fact, those whom God has consecrated to himself and who respond to him with free adherence are constantly animated and renewed by the Spirit(cos76)

The process of becoming a MSM involves several stages of discernment and formation.

Initial formation sets out the basis of the life-giving development of the consecrated person’s identity which continues to grow and deepen during the whole of one’s life.

formation start with discernment, Aspirancy, Postulancy, temporary vows(juniorate) Perpetual vows (ongoing formation) 

Discernment

A particular form of discernment involves the effort to discover our own vocation. Since this is a very personal decision that others cannot make for us, it requires solitude and silence:

Aspirancy 3-6 months

During this period you live with the community for a short time to experience our way of life and confirm your calling

postulancy  1 year

The young woman who asks to become part of our religious family is admitted to the pre-novitiate and accompanied by sister responsible for formation in the community. During this period she should be able to find in this sister with whom she can verify the authenticity of her own request and mature the motivations of her personal response to the gift of God(cos86)

Activities includes

In the pre-novitiate the young woman must be guided toward the definitive choice that will be commit her whole life in our Congregation to the service of God and our brothers and sisters. 

the young woman on her  part, in open to the dialogue with the sister responsible, will verify her ability of giving and of responsible commitments in apostolic work, as her aptitude toward the religious and communitarian life she intends to choose.

Novitiate 

The novitiate consists of an entire year and is to be continuously spend in a house determined for that purpose by the superior determined general with the consent of her council.(cos92)

During the novitiate, the novice should verify, together with the directress and her collaborators, her own suitability of living her consecration to God in this Congregation and the correspondence between her personal vocation and charism of the Congregation itself(93)   

ACTIVITIES

In the community in which the novitiate is inserted, the novices must have the possibility:

  • To verify concretely their ability to live sisterly communion
  • To experience the authenticity of their religious apostolic vocation
  • To understand the necessity of integration prayer with action(cos95)

Temporary profession

At the end of her novitiate, the novice who has matured and chosen to realize her religious vocation in our congregation requests the superior general or the provincial and their councils to be admitted to the temporary profession of vows(cos99)

This profession made is made for one year and it is renewed annually for another four years, precede by the consent of the superior general or the provincial with the consent of their councils(cos100)

Activities include:

During this period, the professed deepens her knowledge of the consecrated life. She commits herself to follow progressively that level of human-religious, theological. apostolic and professional formation which will allow her a full and definitive insertion into the Institute itself.

to that aim, the sisters responsible for formation, develop an appropriate plan of formation that is to be submitted to the major superior(cos,103)

Perpetual vows

The sister living the life of obedience, poverty and chastity, she is consecrated to God through the ministry of the Church they are incorporated into the Institute with the rights and duties defined by the  canon Law and the law of the congregation.

“By this act she is accepted definitively into the congregation of the Mantellate sisters of Mary and assumes fully its life and responsibilities. The congregation on its part commits itself to support the professed sister so that she may fully live out her own vocation( seeDir. cos 105)

Ongoing formation

Growth in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ by means of a constant turning toward Him, begins with Baptism and will be fulfilled in the Kingdom. It follows that formation is not completed with perpetual vows but must continue throughout life, as an ever more responsible and personal commitment(cos111)

Requirements for admission |

Faith

Christian baptized, Confirmed and believing in the teaching of the Church

AGE

Typically between 18- 25 though exceptions can be verified and studyied

Education

Minimum of high school education, college education or professional skill are beneficial but not required

Heath

Good physical and mental health sufficient for the demands of religious life and ministry

Motivation

Genuine desire to serve God through a life of prayer, community, and service to others
